Jack Usry, Rye High Class of 2014, has "tragically died in an accident in NYC" according to a statement put out by Rye High.

High School Principal Patricia Taylor said "It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Jack Usry, Class of 2014, tragically died in an accident in NYC. Jack was the son of Greg and Mary Beth Usry, brother to Connor, Class of 2011, and Quinn, Class of 2017. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers."

Jack was a graphic artist in his sophomore year at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design.

He described himself on his web site:

Jack Usry 2

"From the first time we open our eyes, we are observers of the world around us. Seeing is how we learn, share and experience the world. Memories from my earliest recollection are those of visuality: bright orange balloons in the sky, the lightning strikes of a summer night. I believe this is the case because one does not need to speak any certain language or to pray in the same tongue to behold art. Visual art utilizes the power of creativity and design to communicate and raise our diverse world onto common ground. Common ground where the surreal and comprehensible coexist, where the understood and imagined are bound. From here my ache to create arises.

I was born in New York, the middle child in a family of three boys. As I began to take art classes throughout middle school and into high school, I noticed that the work I would craft was more satisfying to me as an artist if it conveyed an idea or a story. My photographs were more moving when they were captured to accompany my story of the merciless winds of 2012’s Hurricane Sandy, and my graphics were more impactful when designed to receive a response to my favorite charity.

After becoming the Design Editor-in-Chief of the award winning Rye High School yearbook, I knew graphic design was the right path for me. Currently, I am in my sophomore year at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design. While majoring in Graphic Design, I strongly believe it is also critical to take full advantage of UGA’s extensive and diverse art school offerings to expand my experience and education beyond just one medium. As a result, in addition to my graphic design classes, I have also completed coursework in drawing (2 semesters), three-dimensional design, color and composition as well as digital photography and pinhole photography . This January I began my spring 2016 semester enrolled in graphic design, hypermedia, and painting courses as well as several required general education classes."

Our thoughts are with the family.
