Apawamis Flood Control Project

The Rye Flood Action Committee sent along this photo of the new retention project at the Apawamis golf club. These retention containers will hold the runoff from a new construction project for slow release onto the drainage pipe that ultimately goes down Onondaga Street.

Flooding Closes YMCA, Children's Room at Library

There are reports of extensive damage in the Indian Village section of Rye and on Mead Place by the YMCA. Many home owners in these areas were displaced by the March 2nd flood, and were on the road to making repairs, only to be badly hit again by the flooding this past Sunday.

The YMCA apparently had 4 feet of water in the 1st floor and is closed indefinitely. And over 5,000 books, the carpeting and furniture in the recently renovated children's room in the Rye Free Reading Room (the public library) was destroyed by the flood.

Rye Flood Closes Schools, Roads Impassable

Yesterday's flooding in Rye (see earlier Rye flood coverage) has caused all Rye schools to be closed today, April 16, 2007. Many roads remain impassable. The Beaver Swamp Brook was flooded nearly all the way to Coolidge Avenue at 7am this morning.

The Osborn School issued the following:

All schools are closed today, Monday, April 16th. Many roads are closed making travel difficult if not impossible and there has been damage caused by flooding. All after school clubs, events and activities are canceled, as well.

At 6:50am this morning, the National Weather Service issued this advisory advising a coastal flood warning remains in effect until 1pm today:

650 AM EDT MON APR 16 2007

...COASTAL FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON...

DURING THE HIGH TIDE CYCLE THIS MORNING...2 1/2 FT OF SURGE ARE NEEDED TO PRODUCE MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING...WITH 1 1/2 FT TO PRODUCE MINOR FLOODING. MAJOR COASTAL FLOODING IS EXPECTED IN WESTERN LONG ISLAND SOUND...WITH A STORM SURGE OF 4 1/2 TO 5 FEET.

AT STAMFORD...FLOODING OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD BE NEARLY EQUAL TO THAT IN THE DECEMBER 1992 NOREASTER...AND AT KINGS POINT WOULD BE SOMEWHAT WORSE THAN THAT OF THE HALLOWEEN 1991 STORM.

A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH MAY BE REQUIRED FOR THE HIGH TIDE CYCLE TONIGHT...AS ONLY AROUND 1 1/2 TO 2 FT OF SURGE WILL BE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING.

A COASTAL FLOOD WARNING MEANS THAT FLOODING IS IMMINENT. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN THE WARNED AREA SHOULD BE ALERT FOR RISING WATER... AND TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION TO PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY

Rye Hit By Second Flood in Six Weeks

Rye_ny_flood_04152007_coolidge_aven With just six weeks since the record March 2nd flood (see March 2nd flood photos and flood videos - video and photos from today are below) and  some residents not yet back into their homes, Rye battled it out again today with torrential rain and flooding. Rye flooding assured its continued place in conversations, local newspapers and city council meetings when the Blind Brook started spilling over its banks at 3 or 4pm this afternoon.

By 6:30pm, the City of Rye Police Department Rye_ny_flood_04152007_elm_place issued a reverse 911 call to residents warning the Blind Brook was reaching the top of the Bowman Avenue spillway. The call warned residents, especially those in Indian Village, to move vehicles to high ground and to be ready to evacuate if necessary.

The City has opened a temporary shelter at Rye Country Day School.

Video (above) shows the Blind Brook flooding into the parking lot of the Rye YMCA on April 15, 2007 at 4:15pm. On the other side the the brook in the Rye Free Reading Room, Rye's public library.

Video (above) shows the Blind Brook flooding along the Boston Post Road just outside downtown Rye. Most of the property you can see backs up into the Rye Nature Center, although you can see some homes on Loewen Court at the beginning of the video.

Beaver Swamp Brook (above) floods over its banks onto Park Avenue in Rye, New York (NY) on April 15, 2007 at 3:45pm. You can see how the water was backing up and spraying up out of the storm drains and how badly the backyards of some homes were flooded.

Video (above) shows Rye's Blind Brook flooding along Elm Place in downtown Rye on April 15, 2007 at 4:15pm. Rye Public Works and Con Ed were out protecting residents. You can see how the flooding condition gives the bridges across the Blind Brook a beating.

Rye Schools Closed Today (Friday, March 16th)

Rye Flood Videos

This video shows Beaver Swamp Book overflowing on Park Avenue and the Park Avenue bridge on the Rye - Harrison border. Millions of dollars have been spent restoring the Beaver Swamp Brook wetlands to prevent flooding such as this. Some homes were unreachable due to flooding. The Rye fire department had to rescue some people from their homes by pontoon boat.
