Special Needs, Special Day: 7,000 Expected at Playland Friday

Special needs, special day:

PLAYLAND DAY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
EXPECTED TO DRAW OVER 7,000 PEOPLE
County to once again partner with Tommie Cares Foundation
Free rides, entertainment and water sports for children with special needs and their families

County Executive Robert P. Astorino will join Westchester residents with disabilities and their families during a free day of rides, entertainment and activities at the 40th annual Playland Day for People with Disabilities set for Friday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is the third year in a row that Westchester County’s Office for the Disabled and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation have partnered with the Tommie Cares Foundation, which generously sponsors the cost of the event.

“Playland Day is one of my favorite ways to get outside, have some fun and celebrate the people in our lives with disabilities,” Astorino said. “I promise it’s a day you’ll never forget.”

In addition to enjoying the rides at Playland, the Tommie Cares Foundation will once again organize adventure water sports activities at Rye Beach, where specially trained lifeguards and athletes will take a limited number of children with special needs kayaking, stand-up paddling, canoeing, and more. The adventure water sports will begin at 8 a.m. at Rye Beach.

“We are so happy to once again support Westchester County and the Office for the Disabled in the annual Playland Day event,” said Tom Kallish, founder of Tommie Copper and the Tommie Cares Foundation. “Each year just gets better, and the smiles we bring to people’s faces are priceless.”
Astorino added, “I want to thank Tom Kallish and the whole Tommie Cares team for their partnership and continued support of this great event, as well as all our other sponsors and volunteers.”

Verizon, also a sponsor, will provide volunteers to help with traffic control, ride assistance and registration. Pepsi has donated gifts and prizes for the volunteers.

There is no rain date scheduled. For more information, call the Office for the Disabled at (914) 995-2956.
