Rye Beaches Re-Open

Rye beaches re-opened Wednesday afternoon after a sludge leak into the Blind Brook kept them closed since Monday.

As a point of clarification Bishop Nowotnik, Confidential Secretary To the Rye Town Supervisor Joe Carvin, contacted MyRye.com to clarify that Rye Town Park beach (and Playland Beach) remained open thru the sludge scare. Just far enough away from the leaky goo…

Boating and Swimming Advisory Lifted for LI Sound Near Rye

Last Updated on Wednesday, 17 July 2013 14:47

July 17, 2013 — The advisory cautioning against contact with the Long Island Sound near Milton Harbor in Rye and Mamaroneck Harbor has been lifted by the Westchester County Department of Health.  The advisory is being lifted based on the results of water samples which show that the water does not pose a public health risk.

People who use the Long Island Sound in this area for recreational purposes are free to resume direct contact with the water and swimming at the following beaches is now permitted: Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club, Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club, Shore Acres Pointe and Harbor Island Park Beach, all in Mamaroneck; and American Yacht Club, Shenorock Shore Club, Coveleigh Club and Greenhaven Association, all in Mamaroneck.

The advisory had been issued as a precaution because an underground force main break near Blind Brook had released sludge close to where the Blind Brook empties into the Long Island Sound. The Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities took the force main out of service at about 2:15 p.m. on Monday, but repair efforts were hindered by high tide.

Repairs to the force main were completed Tuesday evening and water was pumped through the pipe during the night while workers checked the air relief valves along the force main. Crews finished backfilling this morning and the line has now resumed normal pumping operations.

  1. So now that we’re back to normal the biggest question that needs to be answered is why HealTheHarbor was silent during this whole environmental disaster? Not a peep from an organization who’s motto is, and I’m paraphrasing, “Healing one Harbor at a time from environmental atrocities”. The only word was how people should go to HealTheHarbor.com and watch the mosquito presentation the other night at the Council Meeting.

Where was Mr. Flotie when there really was sh*t and toilet paper floating around Milton Harbor?? Where was he? CRICKETS………….

P.S. I believe the main was broken on Friday because you could smell sewage on Milton Road Friday night. Anyone who swam in Milton Harbor last weekend was , IMO, exposed to raw sewage. It is my guess that there was raw sewage flowing into Milton Harbor for 4 straight days before they fixed it. Don’t ya just love our sewer systems! Let’s run one out to Hen Island!

  2. Where is the outrage from Heal the Harbor over this environmental atrocity? Heal The Harbor’s motto is “Bringing attention to environmental injustice one harbor at a time.”

That one harbor be Milton Harbor. I guess it’s OK for millions of gallons of raw sewage to flow into Milton Harbor. I guess it’s OK that they closed the beaches for 3 days. There is a good possibility swimmers were swimming in raw sewage the weekend before they discovered the leak. I guess Heal the harbor was too busy standing on Hen Island with their arms out to notice the stench in the boat basin. The stench in the boat basin was a clue any environmental injustice organization could easily miss.

  3. Now that the beaches have re-opened we need to do a post-mortem of the events which took place during and after the sewage spill which closed Milton Harbor’s beaches.

Where was Heal The Harbor and Mr. Flotie while the beaches were closed due to massive amounts of Mr. Flotie floating around Milton Harbor? When we needed Heal The Harbor to make a statement about the sh*t floting around Milton Harbor for 4 days, all we heard was CRICKETS…………….
