    Storyland in Glen, NH

It has been there since 1954, but our first visit was this past weekend. Storyland, in Glen, New Hampshire in the White Mountains, is an amusement park but with New England sensibility and built for kids and their parents (not for adults and not for teenagers). If you have kids between 3 and 8 or 9, Storyland is a great destination for a long weekend. We did the trip in a 2-day weekend and the drive back was brutal (7 hours).

Clearwater - Don't Miss It Next Year

A few weekends ago was our annual trip to the great Clearwater Festival. Held in Croton-on-Hudson on the banks of the Hudson River and started by the legendary folk singer Pete Seeger over 35 years ago, Clearwater remains one of the preeminent environmental and music festivals in the country. It is a special treat and not to be missed.

We saw Pete Seeger, lots of other music and heard from Granny D, a 96 year-young political activist who in 1999, at age 89, walked 3,000+ miles across the country to raise awareness for campaign finance reform.

Outside the annual festival Clearwater works on environmental advocacy for the Hudson River and conducts a ton of school programs You can also catch a ride on the Clearwater Sloop by checking their schedule.

Ride the Waves at Splashdown Beach in Fishkill

Splashdownbeach_wave_pool I admit it. I had never been to a water park. Until I took one of our boys to Splashdown Beach in nearby Fishkill, NY. Fishkill is in the Hudson Valley up 684 and across 84 West towards the Hudson and about one hour from Rye. Directions here.

Run by the same family that owns Rocking Horse Ranch (a family resort that gets rave reviews further up in Highland, NY), Splashdown was a mega-hit with our five year old. It is super clean with lots of lifeguards and lots to do including a wave pool, water slides (small and large for various ages), a lazy river, and so many other pools I can't count. There is also mini-golf and an indoor arcade that includes some old fashioned skeet ball. A friend of the owner was there the entire day blowing up balloons shaped like various animals and entertaining all the kids (he was a pied piper of balloons).

The park is not too big and not too small and is perfect for families with kids up to maybe early teens. Kids are $18 and adults are $23 for the day and for the most part, this pays for almost all the rides and attractions. We went on a sunny Friday and never waited more than 2 or 3 minutes for a ride and no pools were overcrowded.

    Enjoy and have fun!
